As you become an avid paddler, there will be techniques that you may learn to refine your knowledge base. Depending on what type of water you will be paddling on the most will determine what type of paddling techniques you will need to focus on. Many beginner paddlers find it difficult to balance in the kayak while paddling. This may be due to the kayak type that you are paddling in. Narrow kayak designs tend to have less stability. The wider kayak designs are more stable, however, you tend to loose speed with the wider kayak designs. It is always a good idea to start paddling in a kayak design that is comfortable to your skill. Starting off in a narrow kayak design may substantially hinder your learning curve.
